Questionable Call Denies Boom 3 points, Game Ends in 0-0 Tie

Published Aug 8, 2020

On a picturesque Friday night in the city, I90 Rivals Roc City Boom squared off against Krajisnik FC. Their first encounter in Utica ended in a 1-1 draw, and both teams were looking to grab 3 crucial points in a hotly contested UPSL Western NY Division.

Roc City had chances early on, and 7 minutes in Cunyeth Vardar played a perfect through ball down the right flank to UPSL Player of the Week Peter DiLorenzo, who missed just wide of the left post. After the water break goalkeeper Stewart Frank kept out a strong shot from 12 yards out with a diving save, followed up by another soon after. Right before half Jesse Toth played in a cross that found AJ Ali who placed it just wide of the right post, and the game went into the break tied at 0-0.

5 minutes into the 2nd half and the Boom thought they had taken the lead. DiLorenzo hammered home a header off a corner kick, but the goal was immediately called back by the referee. The call left the home side searching for answers, and they continued to pressure the Krajisnik defense. In the 66th minute Taner Bay played a corner kick in finding Mwalizi Mutambo, who volleyed it over the crossbar. 7 minutes of added time couldn't differentiate the teams, who split the points for the 2nd time in as many meetings.

The shutout is Stewart Franks' 3rd of the season, leading all goalkeepers in the division.

The result puts the Boom back into 1st place with a 2-3-1 record, Krajisnik moves to 1-2-2. The Boom's next home game is Sunday 8/16 at 4pm against Greater Binghamton FC. Tickets are available at https://tickets.upslsoccer.com/events/greater-binghamton-fc-vs-roc-city-boom2
